Donegal. "Urris Hills Air Crash" Elevation 235 metres (770 feet)
On Good Friday, the 11 April 1941, a Vickers Wellington bomber crashed into the Urris Hills. Alfred Patrick Cattley (Age 25, born in Petrograd (Saint Petersburg) Russia, a British National, home residence was in Ealing, London from 1917 until his death in RAF service in 1941) LinkExternal link and his crew of five perished at 3pm on the slopes of the mountain. Looking for the airfield at Limavady, they got lost in thick fog and mistook Lough Swilly for Lough Foyle. For more information log onto: LinkExternal link

Information in brackets has been verified to me by Tim Cattley a cousin of F/O Alfred Patrick Cattley 221 Sqn RAF Limavady and skipper of W5653 Wellington Mk VIII ASV that crashed 11/04/1941 Urris.

It almost seems an obscenity that such a peaceful and beautiful place, six young airmen disorientated by thick fog and struggling to recognise a familiar landmark in unfamiliar terrain should die in such tragic circumstances.
