"The present bridge over the Nene at Fotheringhay has four segmental arches spanning 30 yards. These are built in two orders, the inner one being chamfered. The width between the parapets [is] 12 feet, and the unusually large keystones project beyond the face of the bridge. It was probably constructed during the second half of the 18th century, as when Bridges compiled his notes about 1719, the bridge built by Queen Elizabeth was still standing. He described it as having four arches covered with wood and stone laid upon it, partly walled and partly railed in. In the illustration he gave from a drawing made in 1718, it appears that it was a timber bridge on stone piers. A stone tablet mentioned by Stukely bore the inscription: This bridge was made by Queen Elizabeth in the 15 yere of her Reyne Ao Dni 1573 - God Save the Queen,while over it in a circle were cut the initials ER with a knot between.In Leland's time it was a timber bridge."
