Cretebom, the Moy concrete steam tug
Creteboom is the hulk of a ferroconcrete steam tug moored in the middle of the River Moy, on the outskirts of Ballina and near where the river enters Killala Bay. One of a pair launched at Shoreham in Sussex in 1920, she was dismantled in 1935 on Teesside and brought to Ballina in 1937 for use as a coastal groyne to improve the shipping channel, but sprang a leak and sank in mid-river. In 1974 she was briefly refloated to be moved a few yards towards Belleek Woods where she lies today. Her sister ship Cretegaff is afloat in Carlingford Marina, Co. Louth in J1812, the last surviving floating example of a British concrete ship from the First World War era.
