Perry Barr Locks - Gauging Weir House
The Tame Valley Canal opened in 1846 provided an alternative route to central Birmingham. There were 13 locks on the 8.5 mile length. Cargoes were charged by weight and distance travelled. Details were kept of all boats using the canal and their unladen displacement in the water. A gauging rod was used to check the laden weight by measuring the change in displacement. The BCN had a number of gauging stations including one at Factory Junction Locks.
