My grandad's "Oul turf spade", Errigle
This is the spade that survived a fire in an outhouse in April, 1962, besides being about 70 -80 years old, it is a for a right-footed person, which my grandfather was. It is more usual for people to be left footed just like the majority of persons are right-handed.

You can see the blackened shaft on the spade which would have been made locally and it was nearly destroyed in a fire here H5758 : The General Purpose House, Errigle The ironic thing is that there is no turf to cut in the bog now, as a plantation of trees has been growing there for the last 30 - 40 years
