Railway Horse-Box
Formerly this Horse-Box, seen on a low loader arriving at Meldon Quarry, was used to carry racehorses by rail to various racetracks around the country.
The vehicle was equipped to carry three horses, a groom, fodder and racing tack.
There was a small compartment for the groom, with a bed and adjacent toilet.
Once it became necessary to carry horses by road transport, some of these short wheelbase (34ft) vehicles were converted for other purposes. The example seen here was converted to a Generator Van and its use here is to provide power to a Dining Train Kitchen Car on the Dartmoor Railway.
