Oranamental Lake Regent's Park
Ice is covering most of the ornamental lake. The morning sunlight is reflected off the icy surface. In the foreground some birds can be seen standing on the ice. It was here on Tuesday 15th January 1867 at 3.30pm that 40 people lost their lives. Hundreds of skaters had crowded onto the frozen lake (at that time the lake had a depth of 12 feet) when the ice cracked and gave way. Despite many efforts it was nearly impossible to rescue those who had fallen into the icy waters. Rescue boats could not be launched as there was too much ice in the lake. Ropes could not be thrown across the lake as the width was too great. Many attempts were made to pull people out. As a result of that tragedy the overall depth of the lake was reduced so such a catastrophe could never be repeated.
