SE4027 : Redundant canal

taken 15 years ago, near to Mickletown, Leeds, England

Redundant canal
Redundant canal
This was a stretch of the Aire & Calder Navigation until, in 1988, opencast mining at the St. Aidan's site came too close to the River Aire. A breach opened up and the river and canal poured through, flooding the pit and necessitating the construction of a new stretch of waterway just to the north of the original course.
