SP3065 : Portobello Bridge, Milverton previously had stone parapets however in Victorian times it was widened with ironwork extensions to support the footpath. These extensions had subsequently corroded and many years ago were fenced off as unsafe and the carriageway width reduced as seen in the picture.

Current proposals to repair the bridge seem to have reached an impasse! English Heritage want the extensions removed and the stone parapets of the historic bridge replaced. Various council schemes to repair the extensions or permanently reduce the carriageway width have not met with approval. Furthermore the scope for removing the extensions, replacing the stone parapets and building new bridges for pedestrians alongside has been somewhat reduced by the redevelopment of the adjacent Potterton's site!
