In the early hours of 16th March 2008 a fire struck the church and reduced it to the charred shell seen in the picture. Subsequent reports point to arson being the cause, possibly linked with unsuccessful attacks on two other churches in the region within a few days.

By an unfortunate coincidence the White Lion pub nearby in Radford Semele was also badly damaged by fire in February 2006 when its thatched roof was destroyed. The pub has since been fully restored. For current progress with the church see SP3464 : Shrunk wrapped church.
