Kielder Observatory
The Kielder Observatory was designed by Charles Barclay Architects and officially opened 25 April 2008 by Sir Arnold Wolfendale, the Astronomer Royal. Standing at an altitude of 1,214 feet the site was selected as it is deemed to be one of the darkest locations in England. The facilities, which include 14" and 20" telescopes, are powered by wind and solar energy.
