Base of round tower, Irish National Heritage Park

This replica of a tower was built in 1857 to commemorate men of Wexford killed in the Crimean war. Round towers were built in the 10th to 12th Centuries, as bell towers and as places of refuge - with door up above ground level to make attack more difficult. The tower is seen beyond the castle in T0123 : Norman castle exhibit, Irish National Heritage Park, and from the other side in T0123 : War memorial, Ferrycarrig, Wexford.
