J3373 : War memorial and wheel, Belfast
taken 15 years ago, near to Belfast, Co Antrim, Northern Ireland

The Anglo-Boer war memorial stands in the grounds of the City Hall, Belfast (on the Donegall Square East side). The sculptor was Sydney March (1875-1968). It was cast by Elkington & co Ltd.
There were several Irish Regiments involved in the war including the 6th lnniskilling Dragoons, 5th Royal Irish Lancers, 6th (Inniskilling) Dragoon Guards, 1st & 2nd Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, 2nd Royal Irish Fusiliers, 1st Royal Irish Regiment, 2nd Royal Irish Rifles, Royal Dublin Fusiliers and the 2nd Royal Munster Fusiliers.
Belfast City Hall was built in 1896/1906, by H&J Martin Link
to a design by Brumwell Thomas. It replaced the White Linen Hall (1785-1896) Link
(“white” refers to the colour of the linen rather than the building) on the same site in the middle of Donegall Square. Apart from its architectural merits and being the seat of the City Council it tends to be the place from where directions are given.
