Samson or Goliath?
Samson or Goliath?
A view directly onto the side of the massive gantry crane 'Goliath' at the Harland and Wolff Heavy Industries in Belfast. One of two gantry cranes over the H&W building dock, the other nicknamed 'Samson', it was constructed for the yard in 1969 by the German engineering firm Krupp. The crane stands 96m tall, has a span of 140m and can lift loads of up to 840 tonnes to a height of 70m. Although designed for the purposes of shipbuilding, H&W are no longer involved in this industry and are now concentrating on offshore renewable energies contracts as well as ship repair and servicing. See LinkExternal link and LinkExternal link for some related images.

Both the OS and Google maps show this as a view along Hamilton Road, but this is pretty much out-of-bounds as it runs into and across the Harland & Wolff complex and the road technically ceased to exist as a through pass when work began on the building dock in the late 1960s. The H&W security guards have been known to be not too happy with photographers. See also J3574 : Hamilton Road, Belfast.
