Mourne Abbey Ruins etc.
Mourne Abbey Ruins etc.
One might think that this was a typical Irish odd juxtaposition of telecommunications mast, ancient abbey ruins, and War of Independence memorial.
The abbey came first of course, Mourne Abbey was built in the early 1200s by the Knights Hospitallers, its ruins now almost obscured by encroaching ivy. The parish of Mourne Abbey also played a major role in the Irish War of Independence. A failed ambush of British forces occurred near the Abbey where eight volunteers lost their lives. Tomás MacCurtain, former Lord Mayor of Cork who was murdered by the Royal Irish Constabulary in 1920, was also from the parish of Mourne Abbey, and is among those commemorated on the roadside memorial. Why the telecommunications mast? I've no idea!
