Castles of Munster: Castle Richard, Cork (1)

Also known as Inchicrenagh, it stands over 65 feet high in a Castle Richard farmyard. The five storey tower house has a date of 1592 and the initials of Thomas Fitgerald on a doorway of the north wall. Lacking fireplaces or gunloops however, a more likely date for its construction is the 1430s or 40s, and its builder, Richard FitzGerald, first seneschal of Imokilly.
