The Orry is an area of common land about one-third of a mile in length, interspersed with trees and divided in the centre by the Linn Burn or Kirkton Burn as it was once known. There are two ranges of houses on either side, Montgomery Street
Link and Polnoon Street
Link . At the upper end the rows of houses are 100 yards and at the lower, 250 yards apart. Mid Road
Link runs across the Orry. The area where a small dam was built on the burn can still be seen behind the two trees on the left hand-side of the photograph
Link . A lade carried water to a corn mill a short distance away on the Orry at Gilmour Street
Link . Records indicate that about 18,000 bushels of grain were ground annually at the mill. Another grain mill, Ross Mill, was situated on the banks of the Earn Water opposite Floors Farm. Click on these links to see other views of the Orry
