The land occupies an enclosure between the New Fen Dyke and the Asgardyke of Elloe, reclaimed from the fen between 1189 and 1205. Soil marks reveal field systems that show the area had already been settled during the Romano-British age up to 400 A.D. when drainage deteriorated.
