Tandem compound steam engine, Museum of Science & Industry
Built 1907 by J & W McNaught of Rochdale for Firgrove Mill, and latterly good for 500 horsepower at 80 rpm on steam at 180 psi. The high pressure cylinder has Corliss valves and the low pressure an expansion slide valve.
SJ8397 : Mills across the water Building on the right is a modern pastiche. I looked at this early in 2008 and realised it for what it was quite quickly. There is an excellent complex of converted mills in this corner. Just as important as Ancoats.
