With regards the two bridges, the road bridge is the more recent and has carried the road since it was originally built. The smaller bridge actually carried a railway from Ballymena to a station called "Retreat" which terminated near Retreat Castle as the railway did not go all the way to Cushendall. "Retreat" was a goods station and passengers had to disembark at Parkmore Station which was probably in the vicinity of this bridge, this area known as Parkmore or Agalane. The line closed permanently in 1940.
