Former Ulster Bank head office, Belfast

The Victorian era saw an enormous growth in many aspects of Belfast life – population, housing, linen, shipbuilding, engineering, financial services and education – all of which were of great benefit to the local architects. Many must have been fair scunnered when the Glasgow architect James Hamilton was commissioned to design the new Ulster Bank head office in Waring Street. His design epitomises the extravagance typical of that period.
It was completed in 1860 but unfortunately on a cramped site in one of the original streets of what had once been Belfast dockland. Now a hotel.
