See J3272 : Tate's Avenue bridge, Belfast (2). The view towards the Lisburn Road showing the difficult job the engineer had in “shoehorning” the new bridge into an existing street. I don’t think that a similar plan would pass today’s “environmental statement” stage.
Tate's Avenue bridge, Belfast

Tate’s Avenue originally crossed the GNR(I)’s Belfast – Dublin railway by a level crossing. The section of the line between Belfast and Lisburn opened in 1839. The present bridge replaced the level crossing.
