Knock - Church of the Apparition
Knock - Church of the Apparition
In 1879, two local women saw an apparition of the Virgin Mary, Saint Joseph, Saint John the Evangelist by the gable of the Church of Saint John the Baptist. The apparition was also witnessed by thirteen additional people and validated by the Catholic Church amid claims of miracle cures. Every year, over a million visit the shrine, as did Pope John Paul II in 1979 and Mother Teresa in 1993. The side of the church on which the apparition appeared was covered and made into a chapel, as shown in the photo.
