The Binnian Tunnel, Silent Valley
The Binnian Tunnel, Silent Valley
The mouth of the Binnian Tunnel at the Silent Valley. The tunnel is 2.5 miles long and was driven straight through Slieve Binnian J3323 : Slieve Binnian (1) to divert water from the Annalong Valley into the Silent Valley Reservoir. Over 150 men, working as two teams from either end of the tunnel, began work in 1947. Using only candlelight to judge the straightness of the bore, the two teams met around 3 years later some 800m under the summit of the mountain and were only inches off each others centre mark.
