Redhill Quarry Siding
One of the principal traffics carried by the Cromford & High Peak Railway, which connected the Peak Forest Canal at Whaley Bridge, near Buxton, with the Cromford Canal at the eponymous village near Matlock, was limestone and sidings were provided to many quarries as it passed across the White Peak. The C&HPR main line, now a walkers' and cyclists' trail, ran just to the left of the left-hand stone wall. The right-hand wall was actually a platform from which stone could be craned into railway wagons standing on a siding in the overgrown area between the walls. The buffer stops of the siding were just in front of the photographer's feet. The grassy bank at top right is the overburden and waste stone from Redhill Quarry, which was behind it. Middleton Top Engine House, a honeypot for photographers, is a short distance off to the left and behind this photographer.
