Archaeologists go in deeper!
Archaeologists go in deeper!
"What big teeth you've got, Mr Engineman," might be another appropriate title for this group of industrial archaeologists getting down to the bottom of it amongst huge gear wheels in the basement of the Middleton Top Engine House. The building, which has been preserved and (except for this area) is open to the public, contains a small beam engine that was used to wind ropes hauling railway wagons up or lowering them down a 1 in 8 incline on the Cromford & High Peak Railway. The engine can still be worked (by compressed air and electricity) but no ropes are wound these days as the railway on the incline closed in 1963.
