The Abbey Gate, Abingdon
The Abbey Gate, which adjoins St. Nicholas's church, was built in 1460. The famous County Hall can be seen through the central archway. The Abbey Gateway abuts the south side of St Nicholas Church, at the west end of Abbey Close, and the County Hall is to the west of it.
Ruskin (Slade Professor of of Art at Oxford from 1869) lodged here for some months in early 1871 whilst working on illuminated mss. at the Bodleian Library.
