Corner protector, Belfast

An old corner protector on the Lisburn Road, Belfast. Cast in the Millfield foundry - there is a badly weathered inscription on it but I cannot make out the full text. Possibly doomed as this block looks destined for demolition.

Discussion on J3272

J3272 : Former Ulster Bank, Lisburn Road, Belfast (March 2016)

Ulster Bank, Lisburn Road opened on 27 January 1927 as an agency from Shaftesbury Square and became a full branch on 2 May 1932, the first Manager being Herbert E Henry. Apparently - the counter was 4 inches higher than normal (small customers need not apply), but that was probably demolished when the "bandit screens" appeared in branches in the early 1970's. The front door step was cut from Castlewellan granite and, if it has survived, is one of the few in the city.

The only recorded excitement was in the very early days, when an adjacent gents outfitter decided to burn some rubbish in the back yard. A conflagration occurred and the fire brigade were called, somewhat delaying the return of the staff to Shaftesbury Square.
