SJ7154 : Coal train through Crewe station

Coal train through Crewe station
Most freight trains heading through Crewe use the avoiding lines (in a cutting / tunnel to the west of the station) so to see one on the "fast" lines through the middle of the station is unusual, more so as this one is running "wrong line", heading northwards on the southbound (up) fast line.

The class 58 diesel locomotives as shown here were relatively short lived, being introduced in the mid-1980s and withdrawn by 2001. They had proved unreliable. See LinkExternal link for details.
Crewe railway station

This railway station, opened in 1837, was once among the busiest in the world and has passed into folklore. It is still a significant railway junction, where the trunk line from London Euston splits into three branches for North Wales, Manchester and the main line continuing towards Preston and Glasgow (the Liverpool branch leaves the main line at weaver Junction about 5 miles south of Warrington). To the south there are lines to Stoke/Derby and Shrewsbury/Cardiff. Freight trains usually avoid the station by using tracks to the west which pass under the main line and Chester branch in tunnels.

The station buildings were refurbished extensively in 1985, and are being refurbished again from 2014 onwards although there is the possibility of the station eventually being replaced altogether as part of the High Speed 2 project.
