The tarmac in the foreground is the very seldom used runway of Ashaig airstrip. The large area of flat land is proving a useful site for gathering together parts of the turbines which are destined for the Edinbane wind farm, which is currently under construction. These two cranes are unloading turbine blades from lorries which have delivered them to here from a ship at nearby Kyle of Lochalsh jetty. The wind farm parts make their onward journey from here by road in short police-escorted convoys.
Edinbane windfarm 2010

The Edinbane wind farm is currently under construction, and will comprise 18 Enercon 2.3 MW wind turbines, with a maximum turbine height of 99.5 metres. The turbine towers will be 67 metres (215 feet) high, blade diameter 66 metres (216 feet).

Preliminary construction commenced in early 2008, whilst main site works commenced during August 2008. Wind turbines started to arrive during late summer 2009 and deliveries will continue through to the beginning of 2010.

This 41.4 MW development will harness the excellent wind resource on the Isle of Skye and the finished wind farm will comprise of 18 wind turbines and produce enough electricity to power over 22,000 homes.

The main access to the site is from the A863 in NG3042 with a light vehicle access from Upper Edinbane in NG3550. The wind farm buildings and turbines are in NG3447, NG3544, NG3545, NG3546, NG3547, and NG3548.

Update (9th July 2010): The Edinbane wind farm was officially opened on Thursday 1st July 2010 by Conservative MP David Mundell, Under-Secretary of State for Scotland. The wind farm is now owned by Vattenfall Wind Power - a Dutch company.
