Bemersyde House
This Country House includes a rectangular Peel tower which dates from the 16th Century. In the 18th Century the house was extended with new Wings added on either side of the original tower house. Sir Walter Scott was a frequent visitor to the house and in 1921 the House was bought by the Government and gifted to Field Marshall Douglas Haig (later Baron Haig of Bemersyde). The house is still lived in by Haig's descendants and the gardens are open during the summer although the house is private.
