Boom Towers, Norwich
A pleasure cruiser on the River Wensum passes between the Boom Towers as it approaches Carrow Bridge. The Boom Towers, unique in Britain, mark the point where the City Walls crossed the river; an iron chain or 'boom' was strung between them preventing ships from passing without permission, allowing the collection of tolls and prevention of the spread of plagues during the 17th century.
