The Market Cross, Newtownards

This is the only surviving 17th Century market cross in Northern Ireland and dates from 1666. An older cross, dating from 1636, stood on this site but it was destroyed by Cromwellian troops in 1658. The original cross resembled a similar structure in Edinburgh, being octagonal, having a flat roof and topped by a stone column some 20 feet in height on which there was a carved lion (this is the comparative structure I think - NT2573 : The Mercat Cross Edinburgh). This later cross was again octagonal but features a smaller conical roof. It features a number of carved gargoyles and is topped by a weathervane.
