J2968 : Railway bridge, Dunmurry (3)
taken 14 years ago, near to Dunmurry, Co Antrim, Northern Ireland
Railway bridge at Dunmurry station
The railway between Belfast (Glengall Place) and Lisburn opened in 1839 as 6’ 2” gauge before being converted to the Irish standard gauge of 5’ 3” in 1849. The sandstone underbridge at Upper Dunmurry Lane (similar to one at Lambeg) seems to date from the opening. At the time the surrounding area was entirely rural.
