Not a castle, but a fortified manor house, hardly changed since the late 13th century. It was built by Lawrence Ludlow, a leading wool merchant of his day. In the background is a 17th century timber framed gatehouse.
The late E.S.Wood in his 'Historic Britain (1998) informed us '"The 'castle' has two towers (of 1115 and 1291) flanking a great hall of 1284. The timbered upper part of the gatehouse dates from 1570".
