The bar's name commemorates the RMS Mauretania (Cunard Line)the liner that held the Blue Riband for the westbound crossing for 20 years. She was a sister ship to the Lusitania.
The ship was built at Wallsend-on-Tyne, Northumberland by Swan, Hunter and Wigham Richardson and launched in 1906 The ship was powered by 4 Parsons steam turbines, also from Tyneside.
