J0407 : St Nicholas' Church, Bridge Street, Dundalk
taken 13 years ago, near to Dundalk, Dowdallshill, Carnbeg and Saint John's Bridge, Louth, Ireland

Seven years after the 1851 consecration of St Patrick's it was decided that the parish needed a second church. Land was bought for £100 and a door to door collection was set in train in the parish. As the parish web-site puts it "A week later the people handed in the sum of two thousand pounds for the new Church" [This would be the equivalent of £176,000 in today's money]. £3000 was eventually spent on the construction but the work proved substandard and ten years later considerable remedial work was needed. Then on the eve of WWII the church was enlarged and renovated. In 2001 and yet again in 2008 major restoration work was undertaken.
