Sligo: Benbulbin "The Noble Six Cross"
Irish Civil War
In September 20 1922, during the Irish Civil War an Irish Republican Army column, including an armoured car were cornered in Sligo. The car was destroyed by another armoured car belonging to the Irish Free State’s National Army, and six of the IRA soldiers (Brigadier Seamus Devins TD, Div. Adj. Brian McNeill, Capt. Harry Benson, Lieut. Paddy Carroll, Vols. Tommy Langan and Joe Banks) fled up the Benbulbin’s slopes. In the end, all were killed after they had surrendered. The Free State forces were out to avenge the earlier killing in September 12 1922 of Brigadier Joe Ring of the Irish Free State’s National Army in the Ox Mountains. (Ring had been the only Mayo IRA officer to go pro-Treaty.) They are known as the "Noble Six". The cross is the area where the IRA soldiers were executed. Discovery Series Map. No.16 Map Ref.
