ND2763 : Hillhead Farm triangulation pillar

taken 18 years ago, near to Lyth, Highland, Scotland

Hillhead Farm triangulation pillar
Hillhead Farm triangulation pillar
This pillar was built as part of the Ordnance Survey's measurement of the 'Caithness Base' in 1952 - a dead straight line 15½ miles long, created in order to relate measurements extrapolated from base lines in England during the Retriangulation of Great Britain (the exercise in which the now familiar National Grid was created). The pillar was placed half way along the line, in case the ground proved too boggy to measure all the way from Spital Hill ND1655 to Warth Hill ND3769, but fortunately it was a dry summer and the exercise was completed successfully.
