TQ4379 : North Woolwich Old Station Museum
taken 21 years ago, near to Woolwich Ferry, Greenwich, England
North Woolwich Old Station Museum
On Pier Road and facing the River Thames, just east of the Woolwich Ferry pier. It was built in 1854 by the Eastern Counties Railway. The building suffered bomb damage during WW2 but continued as a working station until 1979 when the new BR North Woolwich station opened, leaving the old station surplus to requirements. Eventually the Passmore Edwards Museum Trust acquired the station building and platform and the London Docklands Development Corporation provided over £300k for restoration and it opened as a museum of the Great Eastern Railway in 1984. The London Borough of Newham regrettably closed the museum in 2008 and the building is once again disused. The ownership of the building passed to the Lower Lea Tidal Mill Trust.
