Sligo: Benbulben, Marian Year Cross At Glencarbury

1954 - The Marian Year. To honour the special devotion to Our Lady, shrines, crosses and grottos were built in many parts of Ireland. Many of these can still be seen today. In the background is one of the many places where barite mining was carried out.
(Please note: the mine access track in the Gleniff Valley is strictly on private property; trespassers are not welcome. With the farmer's kind permission I was granted access to walk the track. Many thanks for this privilege.) Elevation 471 metres (1546 feet) Discovery Series Map No.16
