Castles of Leinster: Leap, Offaly (1)
The original tower became the principal seat of the Ely O'Carrolls who built it as a defence against the Butlers of Ormond. Its fortunes from then on were quite mixed; in 1513 Gerald, Earl of Kildare failed to capture the castle, leaving it to his son to finish the job with a second attack in 1516. In 1558 the castle was burnt during an unsuccessful attempt to prevent English forces under the Earl of Sussex from occupying it. It was soon recaptured however by William Odhar O'Carroll, who rebuilt it in the 1570s, adding a wing on the north side. By 1659 the castle had passed to the Derby family who subsequently extended and remodelled it, remaining in occupation until its burning by the IRA in 1922.
