Castles of Leinster: Grange, Kildare (1)
Located three miles from Edenderry, this de Birmingham castle is regarded as a fine example of a late 15th century tower house. The ornamental parapets and chimneys were added in the C17 as were other decorative features internally. In the early C18 Walter Bermingham sold Grange to Thomas Tyrell in whose family it remained until 1988. There were grand plans at one time to restore the castle and the gardens, and open it to the public, but although the castle has been saved, the grounds with their walled gardens and the adjoining cottage and outbuildings now appear to have been abandoned to nature.
