Castles of Connacht: Oranmore, Galway
This inhabited three storey tower by the shore overlooking Galway Bay, was noted in 1574 and 1598 as a possession of the Earl of Clanricarde. It was surrendered to the Confederate Irish in 1643, and to the Parliamentarian Sir Charles Coote in 1651, but restored to the 6th Earl in 1662. It was then leased to the Blakes until the late C18, and by 1947 when it had become a ruin, it was sold to Lady Leslie who restored it for occupation during the 1960s.
