taken 15 years ago, 4 km WNW of Glencar, Co Leitrim, Ireland

Sligo: Benbulbin, Glencarbury Barite Mine
Sligo: Benbulbin, Glencarbury Barite Mine
The barite was brought down to Tormore, close to Glencar Lough on the south side of the mountain by a cable car arrangement. The pylons and wire ropes running down the mountain side can still be seen. In the distance Crockauns summit can be seen. Elevation 426 metres (1397 feet) (Please note: the mine access track in the Gleniff Valley is strictly on private property; trespassers are not welcome. With the farmer's kind permission I was granted access to walk the track. Many thanks for this privilege.) Discovery Series Map No.16
