Plaque, The Great Famine
Plaque, The Great Famine
The part of the text in English explains, "The Great Famine 1845 - 1847. It is accepted tradition that Ann Murphy from this townland of Sheskin was the first person in County Monaghan to identify this fungus Phytophthora infestans, or Potato Blight, for what it was in 1845"

The events of the Great Famine are well documented here LinkExternal link

No issue has provoked so much anger or so embittered relations between the two countries as the indisputable fact that huge quantities of food were exported from Ireland to England throughout the period when the people of Ireland were dying of starvation. More at LinkExternal link
