TM2444 : Tumulus on Martlesham Heath

taken 14 years ago, near to Martlesham Heath, Suffolk, England

Tumulus on Martlesham Heath
Tumulus on Martlesham Heath
The heathland east of Ipswich used to be covered by ancient burials mounds, many of which were destroyed when the old airfield was built on Martlesham Heath. Although it has survived complete destruction, this example (probably about 3 - 4000 years old) now suffers the indignity of bearing an old second world war-vintage pillbox on top of it. The tumulus (and attached pillbox) now stands forlornly in a farmer's field just south of BT's old research centre at Martlesham, and is easily visible to the traffic rushing by on the nearby A12.
