Holy Sepulchre Priory was one of 12 monasteries in medieval Thetford and its ruins represent the only English survivial of this small independent order known as the Canons of the Holy Sepulchre. The priory at Thetford is presumed to have been founded in the 1140s by William de Warenne III, earl of Surrey. By 1534 the priory had only six resident canons. The house was suppressed in 1536 and the nave used as a barn. The site was partially excavated in 1969 and is now looked after by English Heritage.
