Captain Bertram Dickson was an aviation pioneer in the early 1900's.
He was the first ever casualty of a mid air collision and died near here as a result of his injuries received.
He held numerous "firsts" in flying - he set two records in Scotland - he made the first ever passenger flight and was also credited with the first ever plane crash in Scotland during the same flight! This was due to the wrong amount of ballast being put on his aircraft - 42 kilograms of lead were added rather than 42 pounds........
