Welsh Highland Railway 87 at Pont Croesor station
87 runs round its train at the temporary southern terminus of the WHR.
This is one of 4 similar Garratt articulated steam locomotives used on the WHR, which were built for South African Railways. This one was built in Belgium in 1936. See LinkExternal link .
They are believed to be the most powerful 2 foot gauge steam locomotives ever built and are clearly suited for hauling heavy trains over the steep gradients and tight curves of the WHR.
